[origin: DE19949031A1] The invention relates to a device for automatically detecting a generator type of a motor vehicle. The characteristic voltage curve is measured on a binder (DF) of the generator (1) and is compared to stored values. A control device (5) is connected to the regulator (2) or the generator (1) via an interface (3) and evaluates the change in voltage ( delta DF) during load changes. To this end, the voltage on the binder (DF) is measured and evaluated before switching on, after switching on and after switching off the electric load (8). The generator type and wrong assemblies can be advantageously detected by the inventive device.
