[origin: DE19858827A1] The invention relates to a sensor having a signal source for emitting a physical signal and a signal detector mounted at a distance from said signal source for receiving the physical signals in the location of the signal detector. The physical signal received is evaluated with the aid of an evaluation unit in which the physical signal received is evaluated on the basis of information stored pertaining the signal source. The relative distance between the signal source and the signal detector is determined on the basis of said evaluation. Relative distance includes the geometric distance between the signal source and the signal detector and the transmission characteristics of the area between the signal source and the signal detector. When one of said parameters is maintained constant, conclusions regarding other parameters may be drawn and indications on given physical variables may be given. Said sensor may be used as an acceleration, pressure, power, gas density, transport speed or flow rate sensor.
