[origin: WO0042052A1] A disaccharide compound having formula (I); wherein R2Y2Y1 is bounded to a ring carbon atom adjacent to the alpha glycosidic linkage; W1, W2, W3 and W4 are independently O, NH or S; R8 is hydrogen, hydroxyl or a hydroxyl protecting group; k, m, n, p and r are independently 0 or 1; X1 is a single bond, O, NR9 or S; X2 is O, NR12, S, C(O)O, C(O)S, C(S)O, C(S)S, C(NR12)O or C(O)NR12; Y1 is a single bond, O, NR10 or S; Y2 is O, NR13, S, C(O)O, C(O)S, C(S)O, C(S)S, C(NR13)O or C(O)NR13; Z1 is a single bond, O, NR11 or S; Z2 is O, NR14, S, C(O)O, C(O)S, C(S)O, C(S)S, C(NR14)O or C(O)NR14.
