[origin: DE10016662A1] For the maintenance of a scraper blade (1), especially in the scraper for a roller of cylinder (20) at a papermaking machine, one end of the blade is grasped at its holder (2) by a maintenance unit to withdraw it longitudinally and automatically, and return it into the holder, which automatically cleans and/or sharpens it. The free end of a worn scraper blade can be gripped to pull it longitudinally clear of its holder, and the maintenance unit replaces it with a fresh blade. While the scraper blade is withdrawn, it is formed into a coil by a winder (14), and is unwound when returned into position. In the case of a worn blade, as it is withdrawn it is reduced to part-lengths. An Independent claim is included for a scraper blade maintenance unit, which can be positioned to one side of the machine. It has a scraper blade movement mechanism, with two rollers (4, 5) which grip the blade from both sides and rotate to move the blade longitudinally between them.
