[origin: EP1158562A1] Potential of the additional electrode (205) is maintained negative with respect to that of the cathode (203), during operation. The negative potential sets up an electrical field in the intervening space. Its field strength is 20% at least, and preferably 100% of that on the anode-facing side of the electron emitter.
