[origin: WO0054033A1] The present invention is an image guide which has applications in such areas as endoscopy and industrial imaging. This invention utilizes gradient-index optical fiber in order to produce an image guide with improved performance characteristics. These improved performance characteristics include increased brightness, enhancedresolution, greater flexibility, and smaller diameter. The subject invention also pertains to a method and instrumentation for in vivo micro- imaging of structure and function at the subcellular level. Different immobilization methods for the preparation of a variety of biosensor probes can be utilized for attachment to the subject probes.
