[origin: WO0054479A2] The invention relates to a portable communications device (1) (such as a mobile telephone or a pager) which comprises an optical display (2) for visually outputting data and a built-in keyboard (3) for manually inputting data. Known built-in keyboards (3) are very small and inconvenient. According to the invention, the mobile telephone (1) is equipped with an keyboard extension (5) which is flexible and can be integrated into the mobile telephone (1). A preferred embodiment relates to a roll-out keyboard (5) which when in use can be extended to a multiple of the surface of the mobile telephone (1) and when not in use is drawn into the mobile telephone (1) by means of a spring mechanism. Alternatively, the keyboard extension (5) can be foldable or unwound or rolled up externally on the mobile telephone (1) or supplied in the form of a modular, plug-in, roll-out keyboard (5) in a separate housing (13). The inventive keyboard extension (5) considerably facilitates the manual input of data into the mobile telephone (1) and increases user comfort without reducing the mobility of use and convenience of the mobile telephone (1). The invention is particularly suitable for mobile telephones (1) which are equipped for exchanging data via e-mail, the Internet or computer networks.
