[origin: EP1164617A1] System for limiting current comprises a self-recuperating current limiting device (10) containing electrodes (1) made of solid metal for connecting to a wiring system to be protected and partially filled with liquid metal (7) with compressor chambers (4) lying between the electrodes. The chambers are made of pressure-tight insulating bodies (5) and an intermediate wall (12) with a connecting channel (8). Gas channels (13) controlled using a control device (31) extend into the current path formed by the liquid metal. Preferably the gas channels terminate directly close to a connecting channel or in a connecting channel. The gas channels run within an intermediate wall. The control device is connected to at least one gas channel via a gas pulse generator (32).
