[origin: WO0062500A2] The invention relates to a method of determining the position of a given bit in a bit vector, which comprises the following steps: storage of the bit vector in a first register; storage of a bit position in the bit vector in a second register; and carrying out a search for a bit presenting a defined logic state in the first register, on the basis of the bit position stored in the second register. If a bit presenting the defined logic state is found the search is terminated and the position of said bit presenting a defined logic state is stored in the second register. Failing this, the search is terminated, the position of the bit in the bit vector is stored in the second register and a first signalling bit is set.
