[origin: DE19914147A1] The invention relates to a self-regenerating liquid metal current limiter which contains solid metal electrodes (1) for connection to an electric circuit to be protected and several compression chambers (4) which are partially filled with liquid metal (7). Said compression chambers (4) are located between the electrodes (1) one behind the other and are configured by pressure-resistant insulating bodies (5; 11) and by partition walls (12) with connecting channels (81; 82; 83; 84) that are supported by said insulating bodies. The partition walls (12) are provided with a plurality of connecting channels (81 ... 84) that are not arranged in a continuously coaxial alignment with respect to the longitudinal axis (6) of the current limiter (10) which axis extends in a direction perpendicular to the partition walls (12). The current limiter (10) is designed in such a manner that it permits various positions of use corresponding to the twist of the current limiter (10) around its substantially horizontal longitudinal axis (6).
