[origin: EP1170141A2] Driven transport drum (51) is on same side as guide plate and printhead. Sprung back pressure, non-driven rollers (61,62) are arranged opposite drum. Letter is gripped between transport drum and back pressure roller. Stationary ink jet printhead (21,22) prints onto letter moved in Z-direction downstream. Printhead is located so distance of most distant pixel from edge (511) of transport drum is smaller than radius of drum perimeter. Driven transport drum (51) is arranged on same side as guide plate and print head. On the other side, opposite the transport drum, are sprung back pressure, non-driven rollers (61,62), arranged so letter fed to them is gripped between the transport drum and a back pressure roller, in the force transmission area. Ink jet head is at minimum distance on one side from the transport drum in the axial direction and on the other side from the contact surface between the guide plate and letter. Print region is displaced in X direction opposing the force transmission area and lies at the edge of the print drum. Stationary ink jet printhead (21,22) prints onto postal item/letter moved in Z-direction downstream. Ink jet head is arranged axial to the transport drum so that the approximately one inch print area is apart from force transmission area, hence the distance of the most distant pixel from the edge (511) of the transport drum is smaller than the radius of the perimeter of the drum.
