Process for operating a storage device comprises only partially charging the device at determined times so that after achieving a determined temperature in a determined distance from the base charging is stopped after the predetermined time. Verfahren zum Betrieb eines Schichtenspeichers (1) bei dem neben der Temperatur des einströmenden Warmwassers die Temperatur in einer bestimmten Höhe des Schichtenspeichers (1) erfaßt und der Speicher (1) bei Unterschreiten einer bestimmten Temperatur durch Zufuhr von Warmwasser aufgeladen wird, bis die Temperatur im untersten Bereich des Speichers einen bestimmten Wert erreicht hat. Um die Abstrahlungsverluste zu vermindern ist vorgesehen, daß zu bestimmten Zeiten der Speicher (1) nur zum Teil aufgeladen wird, wobei nach der Erreichung einer bestimmten Temperatur in einem bestimmten Abstand vom Boden des Speichers die Ladung nach Ablauf einer vorbestimmten Zeit beendet wird. <IMAGE>
