Production of atmosphere rich in carbon monoxide and hydrogen involves the catalysed oxidation of a gaseous hydrocarbon by an oxygenated medium containing nitrogen and oxygen derived from an oxygen-enriched residue from a fractionating column or a permeate residue from a membrane separation of air.
