Abstract (en)

[origin: WO0066432A2] The invention herein provides a method for packaging fresh food, particularly fresh red meat and poultry, to enhance or increase the refrigerated shelf life of such foods. The method comprises enclosing the fresh food within a film structure having a food contact layer and maintaining the environment at 0 DEG C to 8 DEG C. The food contact layer comprises an ionomer, acid copolymer or blends thereof. The package is vacuum sealed, and heated to shrink the film structure or effect a secondary seal for a minimal time and at a minimal temperature. The film structure preferably was made by an extrusion blown process employing a blow-up ratio (BUR) in the range of 3 to 7 and has an oxygen transmission rate in the range of 1500 to 9000 cc/m<2>-day-atm for a 40-55 micron film tested at 23 DEG C and 50 % relative humidity.
