[origin: DE19922125A1] The invention relates to a device for determining the thickness or the number of sheets of a sheet-like object (100). The inventive device comprises a transmitting and a receiving device (102) for transmitting radiation to the object, for receiving reflected radiation containing at least the part of the radiation transmitted to the object (100) that is reflected by the object (100) and for generating a signal which represents the reflected radiation. The inventive device also comprises an evaluation device (104) for determining the thickness of the object (100) by virtue of the pre-determined connections between the signal characteristics and the thickness of the object (100).
