[origin: EP1178169A1] Overlapping signals (S1,S2) are exchanged between a vehicle unit (1) and a user identification unit (I). The user signal (S2) includes an identifier (Si) and a phase image signal (34). The phase image signal received at the vehicle (42) is compared with a reference signal (41) derived from the carrier (27) which may be retarded by a fixed amount and car lock operation (38,O) is only permitted if the identification unit is within an acceptable distance. An Independent claim is also included for equipment which uses the signaling method.
