Abstract (en)

[origin: WO0073980A1] The invention relates to a pattern recognition system according to which a pattern to be recognized later on is given in a learning phase. Said pattern is sequentially detected, that is, the meaningful areas of the pattern are detected and additionally a spatial relation between said areas is stored. In the recognition phase, a hypothesis is established on the basis of the detected data of a first area of a pattern to be recognized and on the basis of the stored data. Said hypothesis indicates a presumed pattern and also gives information on where additional relevant areas are located in the pattern to be recognized if the presumption is correct. The patterns are learnt, stored and recognized on the basis of both the local information and the spatial relation to another. The possible fields of application of the invention are for example robots, text analysis, image analysis but also in the medicinal-technical field (for example for the automated tumor recognition in mammographies etc.).
