[origin: WO0076108A1] The bit transmission quality of a connectionless switching operation such as an IP-packet switching operation is monitored by providing each packet with a checksum. This checksum only helps to determine, at the receiving end, whether or not an error has occurred during the transmission process. It is not possible to determine the number of bit errors that have occurred using this procedure. According to the invention, these problems are solved by applying the BIP calculation method used in connection-oriented switching to connectionless switching.
