Abstract (en)

[origin: EP1181913A2] The present invention provides a microkeratome 10 for creating lamellar sections from a biological tissue containing a blade-post assembly 40 which improves precision and predictability by preventing undesired blade wobbling. Methods and devices are disclosed to inhibit blade wobbling, preferably frictional fittings are employed to secure the blade 50 (or blade assembly 40) within the microkeratome 10. By biasing the blade 50 into a secure position, wobbling during usage is substantially lessened if not eliminated. A modified blade assembly 40 is disclosed having a post 42 that is mated to a surgical blade 50. In one embodiment of the invention, the post 42 can have one or more protrusions that engage at least one side of a recess 18 in the microkeratome 10 thereby creating a frictional fit sufficient to prevent movement of the blade 50 while cutting. In another embodiment of the invention, the recess 18 can include certain biasing elements that engage the post 42 to prevent blade wobbling. Further, the post 42 can contain a coupling that permits transverse oscillation of the blade 50 while the engagement element 44 prevents wobbling motions. <IMAGE>
