[origin: WO0169960A1] Estimating the speed of a mobile radio unit of a mobile radio communications system by a plurality of measurements of a characteristic of a signal between said mobile unit and a base station. The variation of the measurements with respect to one another determines the speed of said mobile radio unit. Controlling handover in a cellular mobile radio network comprising estimating the speed of motion of a mobile radio unit, and making a periodic assessment of the need to handover said mobile unit to another cell or sub-cell. The frequency at which such assessments are made is determined on the basis of the estimated speed of the mobile unit.
