[origin: WO0071028A1] A method and apparatus for diagnosis or imaging of a particular volume of material, including the steps of treating the particular volume of material with light sufficient to promote a multi-photon excitation of at least one photo-active agent contained on or within the particular volume of the material, wherein the at least one photo-active agent becomes active in the particular volume of the material, thereby resulting in the production of an optical signal, and wherein such optical signal is captured in electronic form for diagnosis or imaging of the particular volume of material.
