[origin: EP1188706A2] The escalator has two balustrade bases defining a step or plate width. Each base (14) has a rail (22) which extends over the edge of the step or plate band opposite the balustrade base. The base rail can be mounted on the base with a pretension. The rail can have a central projection retained in a hole in the base by a sprung profile.
