[origin: DE19918365A1] Nucleic acid (I) that encodes flavone synthase II (FNSII) is (i) a 1697 base pair (bp) sequence (1), reproduced, or its fragments; (ii) a sequence that hybridizes to (1) and/or has at least 40% homology with it, and encodes a protein or polypeptide with FNSII activity, or (iii) is the genetic equivalent of (i) or (ii). Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) Nucleic acid (Ia) complementary to (I); (2) recombinant DNA (II) containing (I) or (Ia); (3) host cell containing (II), where this is a vector, optionally including a promoter; (4) polypeptide (III) encoded by (I) or (Ia); (5) transgenic plants containing (I) or (Ia); and (6) producing transgenic plants with altered flower color.
