Abstract (en)

[origin: EP1191345A2] Coil system generates a magnetic field along the z- axis in a working volume centered on the origin. The magnetic coil system comprises inner and outer cylindrical coaxial coils (C1, C2) with a cylindrical magnetic former (P) between them. The inner coil (C1) generates a homogenous field in the working volume (AV), while the outer coil that would generate an inhomogeneous field without the former generates a homogenous field with it. The magnetic former between the two coils is magnetically saturated and has a field direction along the z-axis. Independent claims are made for a method for compensation of field inhomgenities caused by machining tolerances and a method for homogenization of the outer coil system using a magnetically saturated former.
