Abstract (en)

[origin: DE19929578A1] The invention relates to a method and a device for determining the mechanical rigidity of hard and soft biological materials (e.g. articular cartilage) without contact in body cavities (e.g. arthroscopically), using a defined jet of fluid. The distance between the measuring device and the measuring surface (e.g. the joint surface) is continuously measured in a predetermined measuring area using an optical method. The invention is suitable for measuring the mechanical rigidity of native cartilage, replacement articular cartilage, cartilage defect fillings or other biological materials and therefore, for user-independent and quick analysis of the quality of regenerates compared to native starting material.
