Abstract (en)

[origin: WO0173817A1] The invention relates to a gas discharge lamp with a burner provided with a gas discharge vessel (14) with a cavity (15) which is filled with gas and other substances. Two electrodes (16, 18) between which an arc is struck when the gas discharge lamp is operated project into said cavity (15). On the outside of the discharge vessel (14), in the area of the cavity (15), two supplementary electrodes (40, 42) having different polarity are disposed opposite one another. Said supplementary electrodes (40, 42) are produced by coating the outside of the discharge vessel (14) with an electroconductive material. Before and optionally also during the ignition of the gas discharge lamp a high-frequency high voltage is applied to the supplementary electrodes (40, 42), thereby facilitating the ignition of the gas discharge lamp.
