[origin: EP1199664A2] A digital receipt (e-receipt), generated for a purchase transaction, is formatted for transmission over a public or private electronic network. The digital receipt includes an attachment that is correlated to the payment method used by the consumer for purchase of the item in order to authenticate the transaction. The digital receipt is forwarded to the consumer either directly from the retail terminal or indirectly via a data warehouse, clearing center or the like. Exemplary attachments include: an electronic signature captured from a payment/retail terminal; an image of the check captured from a payment/retail terminal; an electronic signature retrieved from a previous e-receipt; and a software application. <IMAGE>
