[origin: WO0103708A1] Methods and compositions are provided for decreasing or regulating ratios of zinc:cadmium and PGE2:PGF2 alpha and regulating the concentration of zinc-containing and PGE2-dependent matrix metalloproteinases in body fluids and tissues of a mammal, comprising administering to the mammal an amount of a pharmaceutically acceptable and bioavailable cadmium salt. Elevated or fluctuating levels of PGE2 and zinc and elevated concentrations of zinc-containing and PGE2-dependent matrix metalloproteinases have been found to be associated with the development of certain diseases.
