Bei einem Beleuchtungssystem (10) für Kraftfahrzeuge wird, um eine möglichst hohe Lichtausbeute zu erzielen, Licht einer HID- bzw. MPXL-Lampe (12) von einem Kollektor (14), der die Lichtquelle (12) zumindest partiell umgibt, gesammelt und zu einem Separator (16) aus lichtleitendem Material weitergleitet, wobei der Separator (16) über eine speziell geformte Lichtaustrittsfläche (38) ein gewünschtes Lichtbündel formt.
