[origin: WO0078816A1] The present invention provides a composition of matter comprising a substantially purified extracellular polysaccharide (EPS) from the terrestrial cyanobacterium <i>Nostoc commune</i>. When mixed with labile material (such as cells or cellular components) the EPS affords protection to the cells during desiccation and long-term storage. The invention thus provides an improved method for room temperature long-term storage of labile material.
