[origin: DE19939211A1] The invention relates to the distribution of packages to recipients. Said method involves the following steps: delivering or sending a package notification card having a machine-readable identification (ID) number to the recipient and putting the same ID number on the package; reading the ID number placed on the package and storing said package in an automatic storage facility under said ID number, inputting the package notification card into an automatic distribution reader for the machine-readable ID number, automatic retrieval of the package from the storage facility, transporting the package to a distribution station that can be closed, opening said station on the basis of the read ID number in the package identification card and closing the station after removal of the package.
