[origin: WO0106938A1] A cannula (10) for insertion into the body of an animal, the cannula (10) having first and second lipped portions (15) defining a slot (14), the first and second lipped portions (15) of the body extending outwardly from the slot (14) such that when the cannula (10) is inserted into the tissue of an animal, the lipped portions (15) substantially prevent the entry of an anatomical structure into or over the slot (14). The cannula (10) is also used in assembly with an obturator (21) adapted for insertion through the lumen of the cannula (10), the assembly being adapted for use in carpal tunnel release.
