[origin: WO0113563A2] A transaction based award program method and apparatus that includes a list of members and merchants participating in the program. A method is provided for operating the transaction based award program wherein participating members earn awards from participating merchants based on transactions recorded in electronic transaction records. The awards being provided in a common currency and wherein the participating merchants are not limited to conducting business in the same or substantially similar industries. The method includes the steps of maintaining a member database and a merchant database that include identification information about the participating members and the participating merchants, respectively, obtaining at least one electronic transaction record that describes a transaction between at least one participating member and at least one participating merchant, determining that the transaction is a qualified transaction, calculating an award value for the qualified transaction, wherein the award value is based on a common currency that is common to all the participating merchants, and accumulating the award value into an award account that is associated with the at least one participating member.
