[origin: EP1209115A2] An automated cross-winder has work stations each with a computer-controlled (40) thermal splicer (1) linked to a textile machine with a compressed air supply (35). Thread ends are spliced by hot air. The thermal splice unit (1) has especially individually controlled air valves (32). After splicing, the heat source (31) and heating elements (45) are switched off and the splice unit is rapidly cooled by compressed expelled by the textile machine. The cooling system is operated especially when making a change from one grade of thread to another which requires a different operating temperature. The cooling system may also be activated following a common thread splice operation.
