[origin: EP1217588A2] Motor vehicle keyless entry system has a first portable transceiver (14, 16) and a second onboard transceiver (18). The range of the mobile transceiver is greater than that of the onboard transceiver. Also the transceiver system is configured so that the commands that the mobile transceiver can issue to the second transceiver are divided into two sets (A, B). With one set only able to be carried out within a range that is closer to the vehicle than the other set. The analysis unit on the second onboard transceiver determines which category a command falls into and then executes it in a range dependent manner.
