Abstract (en)

[origin: GB2354721A] A fluid filter assembly for filtering a fluid, eg oil in a combustion engine, has a housing 2 with a fluid inlet 27, fluid outlet 24, a fluid drain outlet 31 and a filter 1 mounted on a filter support 12, 13, 14, wherein the filter support 12, 13, 14 closes the drain 31. The drain outlet 31 can be opened upon removal of the filter 1 from the housing 2. The filter 1 may be annular and the filter support 12, 13, 14 may have an annular end wall 12 at one end of the filter 1. The annular end wall 12 may have an attached resilient annular valve element 28 which can form a seal with the drain outlet 31 thus closing it. The valve element 28 may also have a flap 30 acting as a non-return valve for the fluid inlet 27. A spring 33 may bias the filter support 12, 13, 14 and valve clement 28 against the drain outlet 31. The housing may comprise a cap 4 with the filter 1 and filter support 12, 13, 14 secured thereto, and a base 3. Removal of the cap 4 along with the filter 1 and filter support 12, 13, 14 from the base 3 can remove the valve element 28 from the drain 31 allowing oil to drain to a sump.
