[origin: DE19936369C1] The correction method adjusts the gap between successive letters in a letter stream when the initial gap width is less than the minimum gap width required by an automatic mail processing machine, by selective removal of spaced letters and shifting the remaining letters to fill the resulting space, with an increased gap width between them. The gap width correction is provided by a correction device in the transport path to the mail processing machine, with the removed letters subsequently returned to the letter stream.
