[origin: CA2385557A1] A bioreactor system (figure 4) for culturing cells, cellular aggregates, tissues and organoids and methods of using same includes a cylindrical react or vessel (10) having an unobstructed longitudinal axis that is rotated about that horizontal axis to suspend cells and/or tissue in a culture medium. Filters (36) are used within the vessel to retain the cells and/or tissues within the culture chamber (30) and may be also used to subdivide the cultur e chamber (30). A pump (3) maintains a flow of oxygen rich culture medium through the vessel (10) to sustain cell respiration. Several methods of operating the bioreactor system are disclosed wherein the vesel is used to culture cells, to grow three dimensional cellular aggregates and tissues, to filter waste materials and toxins from fluids, to commercially produce vario us biological materials from cells and/or tissue, and as a diagnostic or resear ch tool.
