[origin: WO0108025A2] Systems and methods are provided to process a transaction in which a customer purchases an item. An indication that the customer is interested in purchasing the item is received. Information associated with the transaction, such as information associated with the customer, the merchant, and/or the item, is evaluated to determine a subsidy offer, the subsidy offer being associated with a benefit from a subsidy provider to be applied to the transaction. The subsidy offer may be transmitted to the customer, and a response to the subsidy offer may be received from the customer. If the received response indicates acceptance of the subsidy offer, the benefit is applied to the transaction.
