[origin: WO0123737A1] The invention relates to a device and a method for controlling a drive unit, especially of an internal combustion engine of a vehicle, whereby at least one operating variable of said drive unit is detected and depending on said operating variable, at least one actuator of the drive unit is controlled using control variables, according to ranges of functions which can be predetermined or selected. At least two processors in a control device process the possible ranges of functions which are predetermined using a programme code in at least one programme memory allocated to each processor. The possible ranges of functions of the processors, that is, the programme codes in the programme memories allocated to the processors, are identical.
