[origin: EP1223053A2] Method for applying an identification, preferably an identification number (10), onto a surface, especially an engine block of a motor vehicle, comprises an embossed structure having varying depths. Independent claims are also included for an engine component, especially a cylinder crank housing of an internal combustion engine, having an identification and for a body component having an identification on its surface. Preferred Features: The embossed structure is manufactured by material removal or application, especially build-up welding. The embossed structure is applied by laser, especially an Nd:YAG laser or Q-switch laser.
