A suction bar (2) on telescopic rails (14) moves horizontally and vertically to take a film (8) from a stack edge and move it onto a transfer unit (3) with suction belts (18) for further movement towards a placing machine (5). Film is lifted from the transfer unit edge by a second vertically moveable suction bar (4), then moved by a carriage (32) on rails to a position above a placing table (20).
