[origin: WO0072951A1] A device (20) for releasing a volatile substance (21) includes a housing (22) having an interior region (26), a volatile substance (21) contained therein, and the ability to controllably release the volatile substance (21) from the housing (22). Such controllable release can be realized by the housing (22) being substantially permeable to ambient air, yet substantially impermeable to the volatile substance (21) contained within the interior region (26) of the housing (22). Additionally, the invention contemplates the use of one or more porous plugs (33) for diffusing the volatile substance (21) therethrough and eventually into atmosphere in a vapor form. To assist such diffusion, the invention contemplates the use of an electrochemical gas generating cell (95), a heating element (123, 125) and/or other features which allow air to controllably enter into the interior region (26) of the housing (22).
