Abstract (en)

[origin: WO0209251A2] The invention relates to an overvoltage protection device comprising a first electrode (1), a second electrode (2), an active airdrift discharger area(3) existing between the electrodes (1, 2) and a housing accommodating the electrodes (1, 2). When the active airdrift discharger area (3) is ignited, an electric arc (4) is formed between the first electrode (1) and the second electrode (2). According to the invention, the overvoltage protection device is characterised by means of a high capacity to disconnect the follow current, and by a simple design. The first electrode (1) and the second electrode (2) are associated with a third electrode (5) and between the first electrode (1) and the third electrode (5) there is a second airdrift discharger area (6). The third electrode (5) is directly or indirectly connected to the second electrode (2) via at least one impedance, particularly a varistor (7). After the peak current is discharged via the first electrode (1), the first airdrift discharger area (3) and the second electrode (2) of the remaining electric arc (4) from the first airdrift discharger area (3) can be displaced towards the second airdrift discharger area (6), particularly by means of pneumatic or magnetic blow-out.
