[origin: GB2355149A] A portable device 2 comprises a body 4, a cover 6, a multi-functional key 36, an antenna 16 and a speaker 38. The cover has a closed position for at least partially covering the body, and the key is accessible when the cover is in this position. The functionality of the key changes depending upon the state of the device. One such function is the control of the provision of information on a portion 26a of the device's display (26, fig.2a) which is visible through an aperture 42 in the cover. This may occur, for example, if the key is actuated when the device is a phone and has received a message, or missed a call.
