[origin: WO0134959A1] The invention relates to a control system for protecting an internal combustion engine (1) from overloading. The output of the internal combustion engine is adjusted with an output-determining signal (ve) according to an input signal which characterises the desired output. According to the invention, a differential torque (MK(Diff) is calculated from the current motor torque (MK) and a maximum permissible motor torque (MK(Max). This differential torque (MK(Diff) in turn determines an authoritative second signal (ve2) (ve2=f(MK(Diff). A first signal (ve 1) that is determined form an input signal characterising the desired output and the second signal (ve2) are directed to a selecting means (16) which selects the first (ve1) or second signal (ve2) as the signal that determines the output (ve).
