[origin: DE19952996A1] The invention relates to an engraving mechanism of an electronic engraving machine for engraving printing cylinders. Said engraving mechanism (3) consists of a shaft (20) which oscillates about the longitudinal axis with small angles of rotation, a restoring element (21), a shaft bearing (22), a damping device (23), a drive unit (25, 26) for the shaft (20) and a lever-shaped tool holder (24) with an engraving tool (4) in the form of a cutting tool, said tool holder being mounted on the shaft (20). The engraving tool (4) performs a lifting movement in the direction of a rotating printing cylinder (1) in order to engrave cup shapes. The invention is characterised in that the engraving mechanism (3) is positioned in such a way in relation to the printing cylinder (1) that rotates about an axis of rotation (27) that the shaft (20) of the engraving mechanism (3) runs essentially parallel to the axis of rotation (27) of the printing cylinder (1) and the lifting movement of the engraving tool (4) takes place in a plane (30) that is oriented vertically in relation to the axis of rotation (27) of the printing cylinder (1). This improves the geometry of the cup shapes obtained in the engraving process.
