[origin: WO0136998A1] An X-ray beam position monitor has a first series of three collection electrodes (1a, 1b, 1c) and a first biasing electrode (3) for detecting the rotational position of the X-ray beam about a vertical axis (26). The monitor also has a second series of three collection electrodes (5a, 5b, 5c) and a second biasing electrode (7) for detecting the rotational position of the X-ray beam about a horizontal axis (27). Signals generated at the collection electrodes are processed and used to derive the rotational position of the beam about the two axes (26, 27). These signals are also used to derive the translational position of the X-ray beam in horizontal and vertical planes. The beam is centered so that the monitor acts as a null-seeking monitor.
