[origin: FR2800170A1] On traces corresponding to the two modes, correlated event pairs are determined. The ratio of transit times differences over vertical paths Ts and Tp in the S and P domains, corresponding to these events, is found. Values of Ts and Tp over the interval defined by two correlated event pairs are determined, such that for the entire interval, the ratio rt = Ts/Tp equals the ratio Vp/Vs of velocities in the P and S domains, and the mean value of this ratio r over the interval, corresponds to the ratio of the differences between times for vertical paths corresponding to the correlated event pairs. Preferred features: To optimize the ratio rt = Ts/Tp, determinations are made over intervals defined by sampling time ti distributed over the interval considered, forming estimates of delta Vp/Vp - delta Vs/Vs as a function of reflectivity parameters corresponding to each of the two modes of propagation. Alternatively estimates are made of delta Vp and delta Vs, representing respectively variation of velocity in the P domain and in the S domain over the sub interval. Further determinations are made of Ts and Tp for different sampling times ti of the interval considered, such as for each sub interval with these sampling times ti, the relative differential variation delta /rt/rt is equal to the estimate of delta Vp/Vp - delta Vs/Vs determined for the sub interval. Further similar determinations are made of Ts and Tp such that for each sub-interval with these times of sampling ti, the relative differential variation delta r/r, convoluted to the seismic wavelet, is equal to the estimates of delta Vp/Vp - delta Vs/Vs determined for the sub interval. Seismic traces correspond to the P- and S-; or alternatively the P- and PS- propagation modes. Further equations are provided for estimating delta Vp/Vp - delta Vs/Vs.
