[origin: DE19930446C1] The invention relates to a diagnostic method enabling constant monitoring of available resources in production process in which several supply members are linked in the form of a network, which supply a system supplier or other supply members with raw materials, semifinished products, components and services. Each supply member has an input buffer, an output buffer and a processing step. Based on the design thereof, the supply member determines a characteristic number characterizing the operating state of said supply member. Based on the forecast requirements of the system supplier and the actual stocks in the buffers of every supply member, calculations are made with the aid of the characteristic numbers for each supply member to determine whether its stocks are sufficient to meet the forecast demand of the system supplier, that is, whether the supply member is capable of supplying. Deficits in the supplies of a supply member are reported to all other supply members so that greater transparency regarding the actual state of resources in the supply network is achieved without the supply members having to internally disclose their processes. The method is particularly useful for monitoring resources in supply networks linking external supply members. This represents a decisive difference with respect to customary PPS systems that fail to take into account external suppliers and subcontractors.
